Jason’s Deli Ginger Ale Review

img_6973

I’m not sure how much there is to say about Jason’s Deli Ginger Ale. It tastes exactly like ginger ale, no more or less. That being said, it’s very good. I have no idea if this is some exclusive Jason’s Deli mix or if they’re just putting their label on someone else’s product, but I’m into it.

Jarritos Mxcn Cola Review

img_6291

I think this is called Mxcn Cola because it’s supposed to make you think of Mexican Coca-Cola, which uses real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, and is sold by many places that think they’re too cool to sell regular Coca-Cola. Frankly I don’t like Mexican Coca-Cola as much as regular Coca-Cola (which is also, I must admit, the soda I drink the most by far), and I also don’t like it as much as this here Jarritos Mxcn Cola. Jarritos manages something that many other cola drinks cannot, which is that it tastes different from Coca-Cola without tasting bad, something that even Pepsi has not figured out how to do.

Jarritos Grapefruit Soda Review

img_6192

Though I would never consider eating an actual, horrible grapefruit, I find grapefruit soda to be a great joy. Unable to find a consistent supplier for my beloved Red Hare, I mostly content myself with Squirt. Seeing this one at a local international market though, and considering how much I enjoy their pineapple soda, I had to try it. In the end, I enjoyed it, though it doesn’t unseat Red Hare. It’s much less sweet, more crisp and acidic. This is not a bad thing as many fruit sodas are entirely too cloying and candy-like. The minimal sweetness also makes it easier to pair with different foods.

Boots Coconut Cream Soda Review

img_5929

Well, they didn’t lie to me. Not sure why I bought this one – I guess because I love coconut-pineapple juice and pineapple-flavored coconut water – but I don’t actually like coconut in most instances. Not in my chocolate bars, not coating my shrimp, and not on top of my German cakes. And cream soda, frankly, is hit or miss for me. So this soda, which is a cream soda with a strong coconut flavor, fully missed the mark. There’s probably a lot of people out there who’d love it though.

Dublin Tart-n-Sweet Lemonade Review

img_5883

The Dublin Tart-n-Sweet Lemonade is in fact tart, and is in fact sweet, and does in fact taste just like lemonade, except with, you know, bubbles. It doesn’t have any artificial tones, just delivering a pure lemonade experience. It isn’t actually super memorable because it’s so very much “just lemonade” but I think that means it’s successful.

Jackson Hole Western Watermelon Soda Review

img_5650

I love grapefruit soda, and I love pineapple soda, and I love eating watermelon, so even though all the things that are good about watermelon — the brightness, the freshness, the pulpiness, the mild sweetness — are probably impossible to recreate in a soda, I bought this anyway. And yes it’s basically like drinking a melted watermelon Jolly Rancher. I could not drink the entire bottle.

Gale’s Root Beer Review

img_5629

It’s Christmas, and there is time for root beer. Gale’s says that it’s “Cinnamon Ginger Vanilla Flavored” and I guess that’s probably true, but I’m not like a root beer sommelier so I can’t pick out hints of oak or whatever. It tasted pretty minty to me, but not in a bad way, and it didn’t taste medicinal, which is always a relief with these small label root beers. It reminded me more of a birch beer than a root beer, but that’s all right. The minty-ness seemed somehow appropriate for Christmas dinner and so I was grateful that I made a solid choice.

Grapefruit Kiss Review

I’ve been on a bit of a grapefruit soda kick recently, drinking quite a few Squirts (since the Target I shop at stopped carrying my beloved Red Hare Grapefruit Soda), and so when I saw this one at Rocket Fizz I was eager to try it. It doesn’t quite match up to Red Hare, or even to Squirt if I’m honest, but it’s not bad. It’s a tiny bit too sweet, and the “other citrus flavors” advertised on the label are a distraction from the grapefruit, but I still greedily drank the whole bottle, and I wouldn’t turn my nose at having another.

Jones Root Beer Review

I’m surprised it took me so long to try the root beer from Jones Soda, but I’ve tried so many root beers, and liked so many and disliked so many, I’m not really sure how many more root beers I need in my life. Well, I guess there is room for one more, since this one is pretty good, actually. It’s very sweet, a bit on the birch beer side, but not cloying, and not too medicinal or “herby” tasting either. While I wouldn’t say it stands out head and shoulders above many of the other root beers I like, I’d certainly be happy to drink it when I’m at a restaurant that serves mostly or entirely Jones Soda products.

Culver’s Root Beer Review

A fast food restaurant with an in-house root beer brand? Yeah, why not? There’s nothing too exceptional about it, but it’s tasty in a mainstream way. It’s closest to A&W, I’d say (which, depending on where you live, is another fast food place with its own root beer), as it has a creaminess to it. I don’t know that I’d buy a 12-pack of it, but I’d probably choose it every time I find myself inside a Culver’s.

Tepachito Craft Pineapple Cider Review

I like pineapple soda and I like apple cider, so why not a pineapple cider? Though I don’t drink alcohol, and have never had a beer, this drink tastes a little like beer smells, if that makes sense. It’s a non-alcoholic carbonated drink (you know, a soda) but it apparently wants to appeal to fans of alcohol who are choosing not to drink alcohol right now for whatever reason. That is not me, and I couldn’t even get through half the bottle.

Fritz-Kola Review

I had a good experience with their lemonade, but the Fritz-brand cola has the same problems I usually have with small-brand colas. It’s kind of… pungent tasting? It’s apparently quite difficult for a soda company to make a cola that is a) distinct from Coca-Cola and b) still good.
