Bickford’s Sarsaparilla Review

I love sarsaparilla — and root beer and birch beer — and often there’s a bit of a licorice taste present in these drinks, and I accept that. This Bickford’s could be marketed as a licorice-flavored soda, it’s so strong. It completely overwhelms the palate. There’s also a strong sour/bitter note all along the top of it that doesn’t work.

Would I buy it again? No

Lotte Milkis Review

When I saw this at the Asian grocery store in Reseda, I asked myself how far I was willing to go for my art. Milk and yogurt flavored soda far? Could I do it? I had to challenge myself.

It sat in the fridge for days, taunting me. Today I finally cracked it open, taking my first sip within spitting distance of the kitchen sink, just in case. I smelled it: almost no smell. I raised it to my lips…

… and remembered suddenly that cream soda is a thing that exists. This is actually just a sweet cream soda. No big deal, after all. On the other hand, I’m not really a fan of cream soda.

Abita Pecan Pie Soda Review

This has a pretty similar flavor profile to the other “butterscotch”-esque drinks I’ve had recently, but with a slightly more smoky, savory cast to it. Maybe that’s the pecans? I love pecan pie — and have sometimes been known to bake a pecan pie — and, blindfolded, I wouldn’t know this was a pecan pie soda. But it’s a nice attempt and not at all gross.

Would I buy it again? Well, they only sold it in six-packs, so ask me again in five sodas. I guess I’d probably buy Swamp Pop Praline Cream instead if I was shopping for a butterscotch-style drink.
